The 2034 FIFA World Cup
At the end of October FIFA declared Saudi Arabia as the owner bidder for its 2034 World Cup. As such, it is almost certain that the Kingdom will be announced next summer as the host for the global event.
The Ministry of Sport has already started the procurement process for the expansion of stadiums and the construction of new ones in advance of the event, and also to have facilities ready for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, itself a major tournament, and potentially the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
In addition, more than 30 new training facilities will be required to host the event, plus billions of dollars of associated accommodation and transport infrastructure, all of which also form components of the Saudi 2030 Vision.
As a result, the world’s most-watched event provides thousands of new contract, equipment and material supply opportunities for any regional or global company. With the procurement process already started, it’s critical for interested firms to prepare themselves and gain first-mover advantage.
The 2030 World Expo
The BIE announced Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2030 World Expo on 28 November. The project entails the construction of a $7bn+ new city in the north of Riyadh to house the hundreds of pavilions required for the event, and the necessary transport and utilities infrastructure projects required to support it.
Because of the tight time-frame, work on the event will start soon with procurement expected to start in 2024. Saudi Arabia says it will be the biggest ever Expo, with more than 40 million visitors expected.
Other Projects
The events are just two of a multitude of different project programs in the Kingdom, the largest of which is the $880bn+ giga project program. The different programs will need to be co-ordinated with the implementation of the two events to ensure on-time completion, to control costs, and to ensure adequate market capacity to deliver them.
This will be particularly key for major projects such as the King Salman International Airport, the world’s largest, planned in Riyadh and which is expected to serve the event. Likewise, Riyadh’s metro and road system will also need to be updated to cope with the millions of additional visitors.
